Student Affairs and Academic Support is committed to providing professional development opportunities to its student employees to further advance their academic, personal, and professional success.

New Student Employee Orientation

At the beginning of each semester, all new student employees at the University of South Carolina are invited to participate in an orientation. This orientation helps new student employees create connections across the university, hear from university leadership, and learn about professional development opportunities available to them.

New student employee orientation will take in the Russell House Ballroom on:

  • Friday,  August 28th from 12:00 - 2:30pm 
  • Wednesday, September 23rd from 5:00 - 7:30pm

Student Employee Workshop Series

Student Employees are encouraged to participate in professional development throughout the semester. There are two kinds of student employee workshop series that are available:

Core Series: The core series workshops are offered each semester and cover some essential and foundational needs for professional success both now and post-graduateion.

Learn how to manage your time and stay on top of competing priorities. You will leave this workshop with actionable takeaways that will give you the tools to meet every deadline.

When: Tuesday, September 29th from 5:00 - 6:00pm

Semester Spotlight Series: The semester spotlight series are seasonal workshops that rotate onto the schedule to give you additional, potentially niche, insight into other topics related to your personal and professionaldevelopment.

This workshop will be facilitated by Stacey Adams, Founders Federal Credit Union's Financial Education Manager. In this session, student employees can expect to learn about budgeting and how to maximize your money (tips and tricks about money, how you spend money, how to make it grow, etc.).

When: Friday, September 11th from 11:00am - 12:00pm

There are plenty of workplace expectations that aren’t written in the job description. This workshop makes those expectations more visible by exploring communication, workplace etiquette, reliability, boundaries, feedback, and other professional norms.

When: Wednesday, September 16th 10:00 - 11:00am.

The workplace is changing rapidly, and adaptability is becoming a critical career skill. This session introduces students to AI tools they may encounter at USC and in future careers while helping them develop the mindset, flexibility, and critical thinking skills needed to succeed in an evolving professional landscape.

When: Wednesday, September 16th 10:00 - 11:00am.

Conflict is stressful, and whether in your current role as a student employee or in a future position, you will experience some sort of conflict in the workplace. Through this workshop, you will learn practical techniques to communicate clearly under pressure via email, phone, or in person, all while maintaining professionalism.

When: Tuesday, September 22nd from 11:00am - 12:00pm

Each workshop does require registration 24 hours in advance (separate from the new student employee orientation RSVP), which can be found when expanding details for each specific workshop above.

Please note if RSVP's for workshops are low, they may be rescheduled and/or cancelled.

Spur Sessions: Student Employee Coaching

Student Employee of the Month

Nominate an exceptional student for Student Employee of the Month. Nominations are due on the last day of each month to be considered. 

Student Employee of the Year

Student staff across the division will only be considered for the Student Employee of the Year Award if they have been nominated for Student Employee of the Month. If you're eligible, you will receive an email from the High Impact Student Employment Coordinator with next steps.

The recipeint of the Student Employee of the Year award will also be nominated for the National Student Employment Association's Student Employee of the Year award. Therefore, as part of the selection process for this award, student employees will be asked to do the following:
