Making Change Happen

Ms. Nicole Cavanagh loves “the process of building a better social worker” and is busy making change happen by engaging with future social workers. She hopes that she’s making an impact by “helping helpers be better at what they do,” both at the micro and macro levels, through maintaining the integrity of the profession and inspiring students. The field coordinator for the BSW program, Ms. Cavanagh is passionate about making social work values an integral part of students’ lives and identities.

While devoted to educating social work students, Ms. Cavanagh has a long history in geriatrics. She began her career as a social worker for an assisted living facility and has worked in the field for about twenty years, during which time she has served as a licensed administrator and consultant for nursing homes and assisted living facilities. In the field of geriatrics, she said she has maintained a long-standing interest in the training and competency of caregivers, both family and non-family.

Dr. Cavanagh earned her PhD in the Counselor Education  & Supervision program at USC’s College of Education, through which she hopes to improve her ability to train, mentor, coach, and teach individuals to become better practitioners.

Research Background

Trained as a macro social worker, Ms. Cavanagh has spent the majority of her professional career working towards advocating and providing services for the elderly.  Most recently, she has developed and implemented an award-winning “best practice” program for Geriatric Mental Health in Newberry, SC.  She is responsible for developing and implementing a pilot tele-psych program for the state of SC, whose model is currently being used across the state.  She continues to provide professional development and training for physicians, nurses, social workers and caregivers around the state.

As full-time faculty and the BSW field Coordinator, Dr. Cavanagh was part of the team that designed and implemented the COSW’s recently accredited BSW program. Her research interests include professional identity development as it relates to field internships, mental health, clinical supervision and gerontology/aging. Additionally, she is a LISW-CP supervisor.
