I. DeQuincey Newman Institute for Peace and Social Justice

Presents
The Third I. DeQuincey Newman Lecture on Peace and Justice
with Paul Rogat Loeb

   Paul R. Loeb

Tuesday, April 24, 2007

USC School of Law Auditorium

Welcome Flyer (in Adobe Acrobat)

Paul Loeb’s lecture will be based on his award winning books on civic engagement ----“Soul of Citizens”, The Impossible will Take a Little While, and Generation at the Crossroads.  Loeb, the 3rd Newman lecturer on peace and social justice will be engaged in activities during the entire day of his visit to the University of South Carolina campus.

The I. DeQuincey Newman Lecture Series was established by the University of South Carolina College of Social Work Newman Institute for Peace and Social Justice with the intent of examining and highlighting peace and justice from diverse perspectives, also to honor the legacy of the great humanitarian, Isaiah DeQuincey Newman, Civil Rights Activist, Reverend and State Senator.

For seven years, at over a hundred campuses, Paul Loeb, author and lecturer, talked with students about their beliefs and choices.  The result was Generation at the Crossroads:  Apathy & Action on American Campuses (Rutgers University Press, $15.95).  Loeb then looked at how citizens in general can learn to get involved in their communities and keep on being involved through the course of a lifetime , resulting in his acclaimed, Soul of a Citizen: Living With Conviction in a Cynical Time (St. Martins Press $15.95 www.soulofacitizen.org , now with 95,000 copies in print).  Loeb’s newest book on political hope, The Impossible will Take a Little While, (Basic Books $15.95 www.theimpossible.org), was named the #3 political book of  2004 by History Channel and the American Book Association, and won the Nautilus Award for best social change book of the year.

In his books and widespread lectures, Loeb gets beyond prevailing media stereotypes to understand the struggle of the students you teach to find their place in a confusing world.  He looks at how ordinary citizens, of all ages, learn to take committed stands.  He talks of how people get involved in larger community issues and what stops them from getting involved; how they burn out in exhaustion or maintain and purpose rare in purely personal life.  He explores how students and citizens in general can gain the moral, political, and intellectual tools to take responsibility for the future.

We are delighted to have Paul Loeb visit the University of South Carolina, and are equally excited about his talks at the Spring Colloquium co-sponsored by the Graduate School in honor of its centennial celebration and the College of Social Work, and his lecture/discussion co-sponsored by the Honors College. It is in this regard that we ask for your help.  The evening lecture is co-sponsored by various University of South Carolina departments, student organizations, and local churches.  We would be delighted if you could encourage students, faculty from neighboring campuses, colleagues and staff on all of the University of South Carolina campuses and the Columbia community. Talk it up.  Put up some posters or fliers.  Pass the word to all interested parties.  Let the entire Columbia Community know it will be a terrific event.

We believe Loeb’s message is important, and look forward to welcoming him to our campus and the greater Columbia community.  Thank you in advance for your support.

You can get more information on Paul’s work at www.paulloeb.org and more information on his visit at www.cosw.sc.edu or contact Dr. Sadye  Logan, (803) 777-3912.  These events are free to the Public.
