First DeQuincy Newman lecture set for April 28, 2005
The inaugural I. DeQuincy Newman Lecture on Peace and Justice will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. in the USC School of Law Auditorium April 28. Congressman James E. Clyburn will be the speaker.
The I. DeQuincey Newman Lecture series was established by the USC College of Social Work’s I. DeQuincey Newman Institute for Peace and Social Justice with the intent of examining and highlighting peace and justice from diverse perspectives, also to honor the legacy of Isaiah DeQuincey Newman, a Civil Rights activist, state senator, and minister.
Clyburn, a Sumter native, was first elected to serve South Carolina’s Sixth Congressional District in 1992. He currently serves on the House Appropriations Committee, where he is a member of the Subcommittees on Energy and Water Development, Transportation and Treasury, and Legislative Branch. In his first three terms, Clyburn served on the Veterans Affairs and the Transportation and Infrastructure Committees, where he was the ranking member on the Veterans Affairs’ Oversight and Investigation Subcommittee.
