SOCIAL JUSTICE DAY
LETTER OF INVITATION
March 19, 20004
Dear Colleagues and Students:
The College of Social Work, through the I. DeQuincey Newman Institute for Peace and Justice and the SOWK 768K Exploration in Social Justice Issues instructor and class, has set aside Monday, April 5, as Social Justice Day. You are invited to at-tend a day of events that will focus on social justicewhat it is and what it means to us as social workers. There is no better time than now, for us, the social work community and allies to consider such questions as:
Are social workers cultural agents of change or simply lip servers of justice? Or is there truth in the most recent gossip that social work has been “co-opted” by the system?
We are planning an exciting day around our invited speaker, Dr Janet Finn, Professor of Social Work and Anthropology from the University of Montana. Her dissertation research formed the basis for her first book, Tracing the Veins: Of Copper, Culture and Community from Butte to Chuquicamata. Her most recent book, Just Practice: A Social - Justice Oriented Approach to Social Work introduces a new social work paradigm that brings critical cultural theory and modes of inquiry to bear in promoting justice oriented welfare policies, program, and practices.
Because this event is an academic function for the College, your presence during the full day’s events will be in lieu of your working at your field placement on that day. The Field Office encourages all field instructors to participate and view this as an integrated part of their social work intern educational experience. Eight continuing education hours will be provided.
To plan properly for the occasion, the SOWK 768K class earnestly requests your re-sponse to this invitation by completing the attached registration form and return it via e-mail (sadye.logan@sc.edu), regular mail or place it in Logan’s mailbox on 2nd floor of DeSaussure or call 777-5291. Your comments and suggestions are also welcome.
Sincerely,
Dr. Sadye Logan, DSW, LISW-CP
