Human Centered Design... Change Agents for People

Michael Ottone, LISW-CP, CPM

Making Change Happen

When Mike Ottone’s daughter asked him what he did at the Department of Juvenile Justice, he came up with the simplest answer possible. He told her that he works with kids who have problems that they can’t figure out, and he helps them work through the answers.

While he’s now a field clinical instructor for the College of Social Work, he says that the principle of his work is still the same. With more than ten years of experience in the field and over seven years as an adjunct instructor, Mr. Ottone brings together his practice and teaching to expand the knowledge base of future practitioners. He also wants to improve students’ field experience by integrating it with their academic experience, thus better preparing them for their careers.

Mr. Ottone says to make change happen, you have to believe that change is possible. “The most powerful weapon you already own is the ability to be optimistic,” he said. “If you want to succeed, you have to have the ability to believe it’s going to happen.” Mr. Ottone’s optimism has followed him throughout his career, and he hopes to continue making change happen by building relationships with students that will have a lasting impact on their lives.

Research Background

Trained as a clinical social worker, Mr. Ottone has particular experience working direct clinical services with incarcerated adolescents and adolescent substance use/abuse. While at the Department of Juvenile Justice he created, developed, and oversaw the implementation of a new substance use treatment program, saving the agency significant funds previously designated for outside contract services. He continues to have a strong interest in building up community resources and supports for troubled youths.
