The University of South Carolina and the College of Social Work continues to mourn the loss of those killed at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston on June 17th. Three of the victims, Reverend and Senator Clementa Pinckney, Cynthia Graham Hurd and Rev. Daniel Lee Simmons, MSW ’73 were alumni of the University. We extend our sympathies to the victims, their family and friends and the Charleston community; we also hold their impact and legacies close to our hearts.

Rev. Daniel Lee Simmons served several AME churches, guided many with his wisdom and remained committed to the church even in retirement. He was a war veteran, a proud family man and a Gamecock. The Simmons family said, “Although he died at the hands of hate, he lived in the hands of love.”

The University held a campus-wide memorial service on June 22nd led by President Harris Pastides, extending the University’s support for the victims and families of the tragedy. The National Association of Social Workers, South Carolina chapter also released a statement extending its sympathies to the families and friends of the victims. Executive Director Carla Damron, MSW ’84, notes that NASW-SC “is committed to honoring the memory of the lives we lost through our prayers, our thoughts, and our actions.” She also calls for social workers to “continue our fight to protect and serve the vulnerable citizens that Sen.
